The Shift in How You Interact
Photoshop's barrier for decades has been its tools: layers, masks, curves, hundreds of scattered features—much of professional skill is "knowing which tool to use, and where." What the AI assistant aims to smooth away is exactly this layer: you describe the effect you want in a sentence, and it orchestrates the underlying tools to accomplish it. This isn't adding another filter; it's inserting a translation layer between the professional software and the user, downgrading "knowing how to operate" to "knowing how to describe." For beginners it's liberation, and for veterans it's another kind of acceleration.
Adobe's Dilemma and Its Bet
Adobe's position is delicate. On one hand, generative AI is a train it must board, or emerging tools will flip the table on it; on the other, its moat is precisely that complex tool set mastered by countless professionals like muscle memory, and by smoothing away the barrier, AI also dilutes the value of that moat—all while facing the creator community's strong feelings about training data and their livelihoods. This step is both defense and gamble. The practical significance for users: the "ease-of-use-ification" of professional creative tools is an irreversible trend, but the AI assistant is currently better suited to speeding things up and exploring, while fine control and final gatekeeping still depend on a hand that understands the tools.
