The mainstream narrative in the event's early stage was "an AI system's error caused the tragedy," and this version spread extremely fast because it fit everyone's expected emotions: those who fear AI got an example, and the parties involved got an impersonal scapegoat. But as investigative reporters followed the evidence chain down, they found AI's role in it was severely exaggerated, and the real causal chain was a string of human decisions, ignored warnings, and institutional dereliction. The "blame AI" version was popular precisely because it made the people who should be responsible disappear.
The New Playbook of "Blame the Algorithm"

The key questions to defend against this playbook are always: Who decided to deploy this system, who set the threshold, and who had the authority to override its output but didn't? Ask these three questions to the end, and nine times out of ten "AI's error" will take on a human shape.
