The Backstory of the Rumors
That Apple's in-house large-model progress isn't going smoothly has long been no secret, and last year there were already reports it was in talks with Google to have Gemini underpin Siri's core capabilities. Ahead of this year's WWDC, this kind of news has clustered again. It's an awkward position for Apple: on one hand it preaches privacy and on-device intelligence, and on the other it may have to hand its most core assistant to one of its biggest rivals to power. How this passage is worded at the event is itself worth watching.
Don't Rush to Believe the Keynote
Whose model underlies it doesn't actually matter to users; what matters is whether the new Siri can reliably get things done: cross-app execution, understanding context, and not being perfunctory in Chinese again. Over the past few years Apple has painted plenty of AI pies and delivered few, so what really lets you judge isn't the keynote but after the system officially ships—giving it a round of everyday tasks then is more concrete than listening to an hour of announcements.
