The third DevDay office tool arrives
At DevDay on September 29, OpenAI announced three pieces at once: the shared workspace Space, the collaborative document format Pages, and the presentation tool Slides. TechCrunch reported at the time that Slides would come "in the coming weeks." The October 16 ChatGPT release notes delivered on that: Slides is rolling out to Pro, Business and Enterprise users with Space access, on both the web and the desktop app. Individual Plus subscriptions are not on the list.
From a conversation to a deck you can edit
There are two ways in. One is to open Work and ask for a slide or a presentation, describing the topic, the audience and the material to use; you can build on an existing conversation or attach files, and ChatGPT opens the result in Space. The other is to choose Create > Slide in Space and start from a blank slide or a template. Sharing an example deck tells ChatGPT which style and layout to follow.
Text, images, shapes, tables and charts can all be edited directly. To have ChatGPT change one element, select it, choose Request edits and describe the change, such as shortening a slide or updating a chart with new data.
Where collaboration and export stop
Teammates with edit access can work on the same deck simultaneously, @mention each other in comments, or @mention ChatGPT or their own Dot to make changes. The help article says comment-only access is not available at launch. On the web, decks export to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides; the desktop app can open them in PowerPoint or Keynote if those apps are installed.
Windows users face one condition: collaborative Slides in the desktop app needs the system's MXC component. Windows 10 does not support it, and Windows 11 users may need an update or for their organization to enable it. Without it, local slide creation and editing in the desktop app produce ordinary .pptx files, and collaborative Slides is only available in cloud mode or on the web.
Not the same thing as the PowerPoint add-in
OpenAI already has a ChatGPT add-in that works inside PowerPoint on files people already own. Slides instead keeps the deck itself in ChatGPT's Space, and exporting produces a copy. For companies already keeping team documents in Space, decks can now sit next to conversations and Pages. Teams that still live in PowerPoint will need to check exported content and formatting, which is exactly what the help article advises.
