The Instagram Account-Takeover Mess

A wave of hijacked Instagram accounts sparked discussion on Hacker News, with victims' shared experience being: losing an account is easy, and getting Meta to give it back is nearly impossible.

The Victims' Predicament

The so-called "new exploitation technique" described in the posts isn't necessarily that sophisticated—phishing, swapping the bound email, social-engineering support, the old combinations. What really enrages people is the second half: after an account is taken over, victims face a maze-like appeals process, automated support that spins forever, and a human channel that exists in name only. For small businesses and creators who make a living on Instagram, this is like having your livelihood hijacked with no one to report to.

The Old Question of Platform Responsibility

A company Meta's size can't afford enough human support agents—the math works out: with billions of users, every human-handled case is a cost. So the support system is heavily automated, and automation is precisely the worst at handling exceptions like "account hijacked" that require human judgment. Ironically, every platform now advertises using AI to upgrade support, but what victims want has never been slicker bot scripts—it's a real person with the authority and accountability to act. There's no sign of that gap closing in the short term.
