Where AI's Scientific Research Has Reached
Following AI's progress in mathematics (disproving conjectures, finding counterexamples), theoretical physics has become another showcase. Results of this kind usually mean the model, within a vast space of possibilities, proposed a derivation or result that human researchers hadn't thought of and that holds up on verification. Its value is real—AI can tirelessly explore directions human intuition wouldn't venture into, serving as a super "inspiration-and-computation assistant." But exactly how far "produced a new result" goes, how original it is, and whether it passed rigorous peer verification all require looking at the primary paper, not the launch press release.
The Qualification Beyond the Wow
To assess a research contribution, distinguish search and derivation within an existing framework from a new question or method. Task design, original results and independent scrutiny matter more than a “breakthrough” label in a launch post. The weight of this result still needs assessment by researchers who can examine and reproduce it.
