Oracle's Contracted Backlog Hit $664 Billion. Free Cash Flow in the Same Quarter Was Negative $5 Billion

Oracle reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results on September 10: total revenue of $19.35 billion, up 30% year over year; cloud infrastructure revenue more than doubling, up 121% to $7.4 billion; total cloud revenue up 62% to $11.6 billion; and net income available to common shareholders up 60% to $4.68 billion. The headline number is remaining performance obligations, which rose $209 billion year over year to $664 billion, above the $630.6 billion consensus, with more than $30 billion of additional AI cloud contracts booked in the quarter. The delivery figures are equally concrete: 850 megawatts of AI capacity and over 300,000 GPUs delivered in the quarter, close to triple the prior quarter, at 97.9% GPU utilization. The other side of the ledger: $28 billion of capex in the quarter produced negative $5 billion of free cash flow, full-year capex is guided at $90–95 billion, and Oracle completed a $20 billion at-the-market equity sale during the period. Gross margin declined as expected on data-center ramp, with management anticipating a further step down.

$664 Billion and Negative $5 Billion Have to Be Read Together

Both numbers come from the same filing, they point in opposite directions, and dropping either one produces a wrong reading. RPO is contracted but unrecognized revenue plus deferred revenue and uncollected invoices. Adding $209 billion of it in a year means the orders are real. Management gave a more useful breakdown on the call: RPO rose $26 billion from the prior quarter, with about half expected to convert to sales over the next 36 months. So only part of that $664 billion turns into revenue within three years; the rest takes longer. And turning orders into revenue means building the halls first. Capex of $28 billion in the quarter pushed free cash flow to negative $5 billion, with full-year capex guided at $90–95 billion. In the same quarter Oracle sold $20 billion of stock through an at-the-market program — someone has to fund the gap. So the shape of this report isn't "enormously profitable," it's "spending heavily up front in exchange for future contracted revenue."

Delivery Is the Hardest Evidence Here

More telling about execution than RPO are the delivery numbers: 850 megawatts of AI capacity and more than 300,000 GPUs in the quarter, close to triple the prior one, at 97.9% GPU utilization. That utilization figure deserves its own look. Writing about Nscale a couple of days ago, this site raised the general problem that construction and delivery sit between contracted backlog and realized revenue. Oracle supplies the other half of the answer: once capacity is installed, it is running flat out. For judging whether this round of compute investment is idling, utilization near 98% is worth more than any order figure. The risks are in the same materials: gross margin declined on data-center ramp and infrastructure revenue mix, with management expecting another step down, and analysts flagged potential delays at data centers in New Mexico and Wisconsin, which management says do not affect fiscal 2027 revenue guidance.

What It Means If You Buy Cloud and APIs

The legacy software segment came in at $5.5 billion, down 3%, as customers move to cloud — Oracle's center of gravity has fully shifted. Full-year guidance was raised to at least $90 billion in revenue and $8.10 in adjusted EPS, with second-quarter total revenue expected to grow 30–34% and cloud revenue 65–71%. For buyers there are two usable signals. First, supply genuinely is ramping: 850 megawatts and 300,000 GPUs delivered in a single quarter means rentable compute in 2027 should be looser than it is now. Second, a substantial share of that capacity is already locked up in long-term contracts — the $664 billion of RPO is precisely the amount locked. Total supply is rising, but the portion available to buyers without a long-term contract does not necessarily rise with it.
