Reddit Ends RSS on November 13 and Closes Its Public API in March 2027: AI Assistants Will Need a Commercial License

In posts on r/redditdev and r/modnews on September 30, Reddit said it will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, calling RSS "a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse." Its public data API will stop accepting new requests after October 31, begin removing access for unregistered apps on January 12, 2027, and close entirely in March 2027. Third-party apps and bots are being asked to move to Devvit, Reddit's own Developer Platform, backed by a $1 million migration program that pays $1,000 to each eligible app that migrates successfully. Moderators can switch to Discord Relay for alerts, but ordinary users who read Reddit through RSS outside the communities they moderate get no replacement.

Two doors are closing

Reddit is shutting two programmatic ways to read its content. RSS ends on November 13, covering feeds for subreddits, users and comments. The public data API tightens in three steps: no new requests after October 31, removal of unregistered or unresponsive apps starting January 12, 2027, and full closure in March 2027. Reddit's stated reason is blunt: RSS has become "a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse."

Apps and bots that want to keep running must move to Devvit, Reddit's own Developer Platform, where Reddit hosts them. The company is putting $1 million into a migration program, paying $1,000 per eligible app that migrates successfully, and says more than 14,000 apps and bots have already registered (Reddit's own figure). It also acknowledges that "capability gaps" remain for some migrations.

Why this is about AI

TechCrunch notes that once the public API closes, social listening tools, researchers and AI assistants that cite Reddit when answering questions will all need commercial data deals with Reddit. That fits Reddit's business direction: in Q2 2026 its non-advertising "other revenue" grew 24% year over year to $43 million, mainly from AI data licensing.

What it means

Individual users who follow Reddit discussions via RSS are hit first, and Reddit says plainly there is no replacement; moderators can switch to Discord Relay. Teams building AI products that rely on Reddit's public API for retrieval or training data should assess licensing costs before January 2027, or take Reddit out of the pipeline.
