Two new features
On October 5 at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced two shopping features under what it calls Agentic Commerce, aimed at removing every step between seeing a product and owning it.
The first is a conversational AI Shopping Assistant. It remembers what users need, answers questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability, helps compare prices and delivery options, and can complete the purchase in the same conversation. TikTok says it currently draws on product detail pages. The second is Buy Direct, an in-app checkout: see a brand's product in the For You feed and order it with one click.
Both work across the whole app, not just TikTok Shop, the marketplace launched in the US in September 2023. Partners include Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. Last month TikTok gave merchants a Seller Assistant; this applies the same idea to buyers.
Why build it in-house
TechCrunch's read is that TikTok wants to keep shopping inside its own app rather than have users turn to outside AI tools like ChatGPT for product information. Market research estimates TikTok Shop's US sales this year at about $15.8 billion, roughly 18% of US social commerce.
What it means
For brands, this is another checkout point where AI does the comparing and recommending, and the completeness of product detail pages will directly shape how the assistant presents a product. For users, TikTok hasn't answered several key questions: whether paid promotion can influence the assistant's comparisons, how products are ranked inside it, and whether commercial relationships will be clearly labeled. TikTok has not published a rollout timeline; some reports say the US comes first.
