Alternatives

Cowork is Anthropic's agentic product for general knowledge work. It shares foundations with Claude Code; what differs is the target. Claude Code is for writing, debugging and shipping software. Cowork is for documents, spreadsheets and reports.

It arrived as a research preview for Max subscribers on macOS in January 2026, then reached a wider release on February 24 with connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, DocuSign and FactSet, plus deployable plugins for domains like financial analysis, engineering and HR.

How It Differs From Chat

Chat is a conversation. Cowork is a working session: you describe the task, Claude plans it, breaks complex work into subtasks, runs code and shell commands in an isolated environment, coordinates parallel workstreams where it helps, and delivers finished output back into the session for preview and download. You steer along the way.

Permissions and Boundaries

You choose the folders and tools Claude can reach; it can't touch anything else, and deleting anything requires your approval. Cloud sessions (in beta) run in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, with sessions and files saved to your account, so work continues after you close the laptop and resumes from another device. When a task needs a local file or your browser, it reaches back through the desktop app.

One caveat to state plainly: Cowork activity is not yet captured in audit logs or the Compliance API. Regulated industries and teams with strict record-keeping requirements should confirm whether that has changed before adopting it.

What It's Good At

Recurring work pays off fastest: pulling a weekly report from several sources, turning a pile of contracts into a structured sheet, generating materials from a template in bulk. Scheduled daily, weekly and monthly runs make "the same annoying thing every time" its home ground.

Work that turns on judgment, sensitive negotiation, or line-by-line fact checking is a first draft at best.
