What Stainless Does
The official OpenAI and Anthropic SDKs developers have used are, behind the scenes, largely output by Stainless's code-generation pipeline. What it does doesn't sound sexy: automatically generating client libraries in various languages from an API definition, and keeping them continuously in sync. But it's an excellently positioned business—every AI company needs it, and none wants to keep a team to do it in-house. Anthropic buying it is effectively bringing the infrastructure of the developer-experience layer in-house.
A Subtle Chain Reaction
The comments' most-asked question is very practical: what about Stainless's other customers? Can the business of generating SDKs for Anthropic's rivals continue? Even if the contracts stand, competitors will most likely start scouting for alternatives—no one wants their own developer toolchain held by a rival.
