Why the Ranking Changed
A few years ago this headline would have seemed like a fantasy—OpenAI was once synonymous with AI. The change accumulated slowly: Anthropic gained a firm footing in the enterprise market and coding scenarios, the Claude series' reputation among developers kept climbing, while OpenAI was worn down in turn by governance upheavals, talent loss, and rumors of slowing consumer-side growth. Primary-market valuation is a vote on future cash flows, and investors clearly adjusted their bets.
Keep a Bit of Clarity
Remember, too, the watered-down nature of valuations: private-round figures are priced by the last-round investors, reflecting the expectations of a few rather than market consensus, and are not comparable to the market cap of a public company. The multiple between AI companies' revenue and valuation is generally exaggerated, and the ranking could switch again at any time. The one truly reliable conclusion from this news: competition among the leading AI labs has entered a stalemate, and the "one dominant player" script at least can't hold for now.
