Meta Wanted a Content Feed, and It Got Out of Hand
Meta has long wanted to pair its AI product with a scrollable content feed. The trouble is that content in feeds like this is mostly AI-generated or rewritten, with the optimization target being click-through rate, and the result is predictable—headlines get more sensational, content gets emptier. Being halted this time shows that even Meta, which built its business on feeds, found that "news" generated infinitely by an algorithm easily slides into garbage that can't be reined in.
The Perpetual-Motion Machine of Clickbait
The meaning of this goes beyond Meta. The cost of AI producing content is near zero, and attention platforms inherently reward the sensational, and the two together make a clickbait machine that can't stop. Everyone is testing the boundary: how much to generate, whether to label it, how hard to push it. Meta hitting the brakes this time at least shows that a pure-AI content feed still can't get past the user for now.
