Reports say Meta has started collecting fine-grained operational data on employees—mouse tracks, keystrokes, and the like. At a company that built its business on data collection, the lens has finally turned on its own people.

What's Monitored, and Under What Pretext

Per the leak, the collection scope includes workstation-level telemetry like mouse movement, keyboard-input rhythm, and app-usage duration, under the usual pretext of security, efficiency analysis, or "improving tools." Employees' reaction is predictable, and the irony comes directly: all the rhetoric this company uses to explain data collection to users is now applied verbatim to its own employees. Monitoring software was already rampant in the remote-work era, and a big company jumping in effectively stamps its approval on the practice.
